You often hear Carnival executives use the term “Carnival family.”
That’s a bold idea, but it’s often just meaningless corporate speak. Sometimes, however, a situation comes up where both staff and passengers come together in a way that truly lives up to the term.

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald recently shared a story on his Facebook page that was both heartbreaking and uplifting.
Please excuse me for posting this here but it is a message for Coleen.
You must have deleted your post Coleen so I hope you see this. I know how sad you were to be scattering your beloved son’s ashes next week on the Carnival Pride and that you would be doing it ‘alone.’ I have spoken with my colleagues on the ship and all is arranged for you plus, a lovely lady called Gemma, who is also sailing on her own and who tragically lost her son in a motorbike accident recently wrote to me and offered to stand by your side during the ceremony.
Please write to me on the post here or the post where you ask questions ( under the photo of the Carnival Radiance) and I will make sure I arrange everything.
Coleen has not publicy answered, but Heald’s post touched off an impressive display of support.
Many passengers shared how they sympathized with Coleen.
“As a mom who just lost her daughter to suicide 6 weeks ago today. I would stand with Colleen if I was going to be on the Pride,” shared Tina Schlough.
Sharon Knifton shared her sympathy as well.
“My heart breaks for the families. I hope the mothers manage to make contact and can support each other. Gemma’s offer of support is brave and so compassionate . She demonstrates what being ‘Carnival Family’ really means,” she wrote.
“Just when I’m about to give up on human kindness I read this. Gives me hope. Blessing to Coleen & Gemma – May they somehow find peace,” added Heather Thomson Jamieson.
In addition, some passengers volunteered to join Coleen.
“I will be on the Pride next week and would be happy to stand by your side during this celebration of life and honoring your son,” Audra Kunkel wrote.

Marilyn Sansone-Syrovatka summed up what many people were expressing.
“This is why I always say Carnival is like family because no other cruise line cares as much as Carnival does. My prayers for both ladies,” she shared.
